Share your story
Have you been ...
… working remotely for at least 6 monts?
… living a nomadic lifestyle?
… at least 18 years old?
… fluent in English or Dutch?
If the answer is ‘yes’ to all of the above, you can join this study! There are two ways to join: through a personal interview or by filling out a questionnaire. Below, you can find more information on what it entails to participate.
In Bali?
In Bali during September, October, or November 2023? Join the interview part! Share your story during an interview at a time and place that suits you. The interview will take about an hour (or longer if you prefer) and will be about your motivation to be in Bali, your experiences as a digital nomad, your experiences with moving in your childhood, your desire to feel at home somewhere, and how you see your future. You will also fill out a short version of the questionnaire described in the next section.
Elsewhere in the world?
Not in Bali or short on time? No problem! Fill out the questionnaire about your motivations to go nomadic, your background, personality, the moves you experienced in your childhood, and your future aspirations. In addition, you will be asked whether you would be willing to help out again in the future. It would be highly informative to have a follow-up after a few years, to see where you are. Are you still moving around? Did you change your preferences? Or have you settled down, and if so, where and why?

How will I use your story?
Your story will be anonymized when you take part in the interviews or questionnaires. That means that your name will not be mentioned when you do not want it to. Your data (that is your interview and/or answers to the questionnaire) will be processed in line with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and will be used for scientific research papers, published in scientific journals, and read by other scientists in the field. I am also planning articles written for the general public, published in magazines, on this website, and in newspapers, or used as inputs for a podcast (only if you give explicit permission for the latter). Curious about the results? I would be happy to share research outputs with you once they are ready.
What are your rights?
You take part in the interview or questionnaire voluntarily and can quit at any time. You will not be pressed to answer questions that you do not want to respond to. The interview will be audio-recorded to verify that your statements are processed accurately. You are invited to ask questions about the study at any time before, during, or after the interview. You are also welcome to read the notes taken during the interview and adjust these where needed. At any time before the publication of the study, you are free to erase parts of your story or withdraw from the study completely.
How will your data be stored?
Your data will be stored on password-secured drives that only the researcher(s) of this project can access. Your contact details (e.g., e-mail address) will only be stored with your explicit consent and will only be used to contact you about this specific study or a potential follow-up. If you decide to participate in a follow-up, a unique identifier code will be used to link data from this study to later studies. Your name and/or contact details will be stored separately from your interview/questionnaire data, to make sure that your data cannot be linked to your name or contact details. Research data will be securely stored for up to 10 years after publication for further research and replication purposes, and are destroyed afterwards.
